Thursday 4th July
A slightly later start today as didn’t need to have our bags outside our rooms, nice breakfast of avocado on toast, with poached egg and crispy bacon, egg yolk almost orange!
Photo opportunity of Carew castle on our way to Tenby, so many castles! This one was quite pretty set in a field of wild flowers
Then on to Tenby to spend a few hours, a seaside town, I believe voted the nicest beach in the UK, certainly popular with the local tourists, and their dogs! A pretty little town - good street names - Upper Frog Street and Lower Frog Street
The tide was out whilst we were there, they have a tidal range of 7.7 metres which is huge, always weird seeing bots sitting on the bottom.
Lunch was sitting on a bench, people watching and listening to a busker play guitar, back on the coach and a stop to see Pembroke castle, and a statue of Henry VII….and his dog, maybe that is where it all started?
Along the coast, weather deteriorating a bit, past another popular beach.
And then on to St Davids the bishops palace which is in ruins because of Henry VIII, but interesting still, a wonderful new gate at the entrance and you can climb up the tower, as you do when opportunity arises. Always a good view from up there.
The cathedral is quite beautiful a Norman Cathedral, set in a valley instead of on top of a rise as often happens in rolling country. they have a shrine to St David, you used to be able to put your hand in a hole into what was supposedly his coffin and pray, but now the hole is still there but they have sealed the coffin properly. The cathedral is what makes St Davids the smallest city in the UK.
Interesting to see the flat ceiling it is quite beautiful, simple timber but intricate as well. Then the floor is just as beautiful
There is a tomb of Edmund Tudor rests here, the grandfather of Henry VIII, it is supposed that it may have saved it from more destruction when Henry took the churches power and money away from the church, so he could get a divorce.
Back to the hotel and our farewell dinner, goats cheese with beetroot textures, figs, Parmesan tuille and balsamic, followed by Sea Bass with prawn risotto and basil pesto, and a cheese board, already had a blackcurrant sorbet at St Davids.
Wow. the castles, the gate, the history, the food. Look like a good bunch of people too.xx
