Saturday 8th June Honfleur

Saturday morning after breakfast, where I nearly had a big faux pas! There was a bowl of eggs there and in other restaurants they have provided bowls of boiled eggs, the trick with this one is it wasn’t cooked - luckily I hadn’t got around to cracking it when the manager came up to me and tole me that it need to go in like a mini chip basket into an oblong boiling water container - who new! Anyway went back down to the town to see the market. Look closely now this is nougat!!! I know! i did purchase some but it was hugely expensive, so expensive I can’t tell, but will last me the rest of my trip when I want something sweet.

A lovely fruit stall, I did buy some strawberries, but not from here, they were the nicest juiciest strawberries I can remember, fresh from the fields.

Something a little amusing.

In the afternoon we headed off into the countryside a round Deauville for some cider and calvados tasting and to learn about the production. On the way stopped a lovely little country church Notre Dame de Grace, unusual as it has all these model boats hanging up inside and is dedicated to the fishermen and sailors in the area

Has it’s bells on a stand outside

We then went on to the cider and Calvados place and learnt about the process, they use 25 different varieties of cider And make apple juice, cider, a thing called PoMMo which was really nice and Calvados which was like fire water, think I had my camera on video as photos were blurry, but do have one of the still, and that was before the tasting!

On the way back to Honfleur, our guide was telling us about some of the houses with thatched rooves, that instead of capping they plant Iris corms along the ridge, the corms help keep out the weather and also suck up any moisture, and also the roots hold everything together, sadly we were just a little late for Iris season but it must look spectacular,

This photo shows the irises and also the Normandy bridge in the background plus some of the town of Honfleur, we walked down a track from a lookout almost directly to our hotel. The bridge takes you to Le Havre which has a big container port, this is the Estuary of La Seine.

Then it was back down to the town for another dinner - this time it was a salad with goats cheese - very yummy.
