Thursday 20th June Dartmoor to Falmouth

A lovely breakfast in the dining room, granola and fruit salad, followed by smashed avocado on sour dough toast and poached eggs, yum! Another beautiful day greeted us as we passed by more ponies, Dartmoor prison and sheep as we moved out of Dartmoor.

Apparently the EU wanted to close the prison down as it was inhumane, but they left the EU anyway, so  still in operation.Francis Drake was born, the suitably proud looking privateer grace the roundabout.

Travelled through some lovely country, passed out of Devon into Cornwall and the landscape was more hedgerows than trees, lots of pretty wild flowers, Our driver, Ken, is amazing, how he squeezes through tight spaces, we had gone over a bridge yesterday with just a couple of inches to spare either side, today was going to provide similar challengers, it became quite stressful, sitting in the front seat today! Luckily  as we are usually the larger vehicle the opposing vehicle dowels the reversing.

We stopped at Port Isaac, alias Port Wen of Doc Martin fame, from the school house on one side, down and up the other, the views were lovely, on a sunny windless day, the poor people who live in the house that was the surgery must get sick of tourists. Although I suspect the inaccessibility keeps the big buses away, there is a car park just out of the village though. The show has obviously meant a boom for the place. The Doc’s house is the little grey one next to the large grey one, beside the white one in the middle is of the photo. A beautiful day to be there

The Chemist

And the seagulls, I had just finished telling Yvonne, my travelling companion about Sonja’s warning regarding  seagulls, when another of our tour members came along telling us they had just lost their ice cream to a seagull. Lovely flowers taking over a wall below.

Some more tight lanes and then out on to the main roads. It’s hard to take photos as the hedgerows are quite high, you don’t get to see much. On to Padstow, Here it is Rick Steinville. Restaurants, Fish and chips, deli, down by the sure and even in the township some merchandise, glass jugs , crockery etc, all looking very nice and expensive. His seafood restaurant… He was brought up here.

Wandered in to the town, had a pasty and hid from the seagulls until it was finished., some lovely floral arrangements on the pubs.

Sat down by the harbour for a little while and people watched, also dog watched, there was an abundance of dogs, it seems they are becoming very entitled, dog treats and bowls available in most eating establishments, a cruise boat came in and there must have been a dozen or so dogs on the boat.

Onward to Falmouth where we are staying in a very comfortable hotel, previously owned/built by a brewer who patented the screw top, it’s a sizeable hotel, in the boutique sense. swimming pool and spa etc. Walked down to the waterfront It is the third largest deep natural deep water harbour in the world, we were told Sydney was the largest, not sure where runs second. Dined on fish and chops and mushy peas with tartare sauce, A huge piece of cod, and very nice it was too.
